Bulletin: Cencon and CenTran 4 Version Compatibility with

Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2012

Date: 02/26/2013

Visual Studio 2012 included the final update to the old Visual C++ runtime. Microsoft in this final release decided to drop support for a type of database cursor that ALL currently released versions of Cencon (including DBSetupUtility) and CenTran use for database access. This update is part of Windows 8 and is in the process of being pushed out to other versions of Windows via Windows Update. Once that update is installed, the Cencon family of software breaks.

Workaround #1:

Downgrade the Visual C++ runtime to an earlier version. Customer will need to contact Microsoft to determine the impact of uninstalling the latest Visual C++ runtime on Visual Studio and the operating system and will need to contact the vendors of any other software that may require the latest version of the runtime.

Workaround #2:

For developers, Cencon may be launched from within Visual Studio 2010 without uninstalling Visual Studio 2012. The open existing project functionality is used, but rather than browsing for a *.vcproj file, etc., browse for and select the Cencon.exe file, and then start a debug instance of Cencon.exe to run the program. Launching the application this way seems to run with the down level runtime even if the newer one is installed on the system.

This issue has been resolved in the current version of Cencon being tested (4.1.5.XXXX). Once validation testing completes successfully, customers facing this problem will be able to upgrade to the new client version.
