PLT-03960, Rev. A.0 Introduction

1 Introduction

HID Global credentials are constructed using materials including PVC, PETF, TPE and ABS. They contain RF devices and antennas. To provide a lifetime of operation and avoid premature failure, we recommend that you follow our credential handling guidelines.

Note: Failure to adhere to the following cautions and recommendations could result in damage or failure and may invalidate your warranty.

1.1 Cautions

  • Do not use for any purpose other than access control or identification.
  • Do not use in proximity to devices or areas with high levels of RF or electromagnetic radiation, for example:
    • Wireless charging devices
    • High voltage environments
    • Arc welding
    • MRI scanners
    • Microwave ovens
    • Medical & industrial X-ray equipment.
  • Do not expose to extreme heat or open flame, for example clothes irons or hair dryers.
  • Do not leave in direct sunlight, for example on the dashboard of a car unless designed for automotive applications.
  • Do not immerse in water, for example a washing machine or during bathing or swimming.
  • Do not slot punch cards unless designed to accept a slot punch. For further details, see HID Global Credential Identification Markings Application Note (AN0109), available on HID Document Library .
  • Do not slot punch cards outside the designated slot locations indicated on the card.
  • Do not print onto slot punched cards.
  • Do not use to pry, rotate items, or scrape windshields, as this can stress the edge of the card and damage the embedded components.
  • Do not bend or otherwise physically stress, for example by placing in a back pocket.
  • Do not leave in the reader field for prolonged periods, for example to act as part of a control system.
  • Do not affix tags to metallic devices.
  • Do not drop key fobs onto hard surfaces.

1.2 Recommendations

  • Use a high quality card holder or lanyard designed for PVC or composite RFID cards. We recommend the use of PVC-free holders, for example ABS or polypropylene.
  • Use a high quality printer. HID recommends the use of re-transfer printing (HDP) for composite cards and direct-to-card printing (DTC) for 100% PVC cards.
  • Handle cards by the edges before printing. Clean all cards with 99% pure isopropyl alcohol to obtain the best printing results.
  • Refer to the datasheet for environmental specifications, for example storage and operational temperature ranges.
  • Place UHF cards in card holders at all times to achieve optimal performance.
  • Dispose of responsibly in accordance with local waste regulations and data protection laws.
  • Follow your organization's security policy in relation to the management of physical identity credentials.
