Technical Bulletin # 970516

Date: 5/11/98

Product: 177-RG5 & 178-RG5 Product Category: Door Openers

Subject: Power Supply for the 177-RG5 and 178-RG5 Door Openers

The 177-RG5 and the 178-RG5 are reverse action door openers. They will not operate on 24 VAC. They require a 24 VDC power source or the SR-1 Silencing Assembly.

A "reverse action" door opener means that in the normal position (Power is OFF) the door opener is unlocked. To lock the door, power must be applied (or turned ON). When a "normal action" door opener is energized by AC power you hear a buzzing sound from the opener. This is typical of any AC door opener. To eliminate the buzzing sound a DC power source should be used.

A 24 VDC power source can be obtained by using an Edwards 592 Signaling Transformer in conjunction with the Edwards SR-1 Silencing Assembly. The Silencing Assembly is a rectifier that converts an AC voltage to a DC voltage (ref. Bulletin #970515).
